I drew inspiration from Laura Tremaine’s beautiful podcast, 10 Things to Tell You, for my first blog post. Most of her episodes end with a call to action to share your thoughts on the topic of the week in your journal, with a friend, or in a social media post. I’m going to share my answer to who I was 10 years ago with all of you.
This topic definitely gives me a laugh. How about you? Picturing my 30-year-old self has me asking, how did I do it? I was days away from delivering my second baby, and I was pretty sure I was going to rock the whole mothering thing the second time around. Spoiler alert, I did NOT rock it! I had lived in our new city and home for less than a year, so I was still in that awkward stage of meeting, in a somewhat stalker-like way, new friends.
And yoga? Well, I had a version of yoga going on. I was keeping it together (mostly) with the demands of a sensitive, persistent toddler. And I did some yoga videos in the basement now and then. At that point in time I had been practicing yoga for several years, but I lost little pieces of myself during the child-bearing years and a consistent yoga practice was one of the casualties.
Ten years ago I needed a lot more tools than I had. I think most new parents and anyone who’s met the age of 30 can relate. I had support of great family and friends, but I didn’t have the tools to take care of myself. Can you relate? The term self-care gets thrown around a lot these days, and it typically conjures up images of spa days or something indulgent. Well if you have a busy family or job (or both!) or if you are facing mental health challenges, you may not have the time or motivation for that.
Seen through the lens of yoga, self-care is about taking the time to know yourself deeply moment-to-moment so that you can clearly see what your needs are. It may sound like a pretty big task because it is! These skills are not taught to us in school, and our busy high-tech world leaves little space for tuning into our own needs.
In my next several posts, I’ll cover principles of yoga that can help you get clear on what your needs are so that you can fulfill them. Couldn’t we all use a little clarity right now?
